Special Events at Judson Church
RALLY SUNDAY kicks off the new year of learning here at Judson on Sunday, September 10. Activities downstairs will include:
- a “Potluck Picnic” in Fellowship Hall after the 9:30 am service. Please bring “picnic style” food to add to the table: sandwich fixings (breads/buns and/or cheeses and/or meats, etc.); or finger foods; or veggies or fruit;
- the “Frozen t-shirts” contest for young and old in Fellowship Hall, along with a few added inter-generational games;
- and, of course, “Gutter Sundae” outside! (Adults are always welcome to participate! For those of us less daring, there will be ice-cream sandwiches.)
This might be a fun Sunday to invite friends and neighbors to get a “taste” of this community.
Community Information Event
During the spring and summer, members and adjunct members of the Property Committee installed rain gardens in three locations around the Judson building. Our process started nearly a year ago. We applied for and received a mini grant from the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization. We proposed installing these rain gardens to capture runoff rain from our roofs and filter it before it flowed into the street and directly to the Mississippi River. The grant was used primarily to pay for the plants, the mulch and some educational material for the children. Our church volunteers provided the labor.
Work included building retaining walls to slow runoff from the gardens, digging out roots from removed trees, removing overgrown former plantings, removing extra soil, adding compost and turning over the gardens, shaping the bowls to capture the rain, installing stepping stones around the church sign, adding rock to prevent erosion, digging in plants, and spreading mulch to limit weeds and keep the soil moist. We’ve been lucky this summer that most of the time there’s been adequate rain to keep all the new, baby plants watered, and only a couple of times have we needed to use a sprinkler to keep all of them happy. We have actually had to weed the gardens a bit already.
Following the dedication of the gardens there will be a community education event about the rain gardens. The public is being invited to come from 12:30 – 2:00 pm with an information table next to the Little Library garden. Help with set-up and other activities is needed. Please contact Barb Balcom (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Jane Jacobson (email@example.com) if you can help out.
Mark your calendars for Sunday, March 18, 2018. The Minneapolis Trombone Choir will present their 44th concert at 4 pm. Music from classical, to jazz to ragtime. Suggested donation $15. All proceeds go the the Special Music Fund at Judson Church.
