Rally Sunday

Homily: “A More Excellent Way” –  Rev. Travis Norvell

Worship Leader: Gayle Foster Lewis

Personal Reflection: Urban Immersion Youth

Music: Judson Choir

Ushers: Catalina Martinez, Elroy, Mac Chatfield, Sandi Knoche

Email Notes from Travis

We ache over the destruction of Hurricane Irma, while we still grasp the destruction of Hurricane Harvey, not to mention the fires in the west, the uncertainty those under the DACA program must surely feel, and the national and international list can go on and on. Then there are our own personal and family issues: grief, health, job security, transitions, a debt the list too could go on and on.

In a similar situation, a first-century peasant poet/prophet dared to offer an alternative vision of the good life. As we begin our church program year this Sunday we will focus on Jesus’ longest sermon, the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5-7. What did Jesus have to say about the good life? How was his vision different than the other options? Why do people find so attractive, yet difficult to practice? Let us explore together.

Peace, Travis

Capri Theater – First Thursday of each month – Films and Discussion

Today’s feature (September 7) is “Fences” at 7 pm/$5

Playwright August Wilson’s masterpiece about a working-class African American father’s struggle to raise his family in 1950s Pittsburgh finally made it to the screen after numerous attempts over many years. Directed by and starring Denzel Washington (Malcolm X) alongside Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder) in her Academy-Award winning role, Fences examines former Negro-league baseball player Troy Maxson (Washington) as he fights to provide for those he loves in a world that threatens to push him down. This directorial triumph pulses with the universal truths of love and forgiveness, regardless of what lies beyond your own fence. Each First Thursday Films screening at the Capri is followed by a passionate discussion of the movie. Fences could have no greater moderator than Lou Bellamy, Founder and Artistic Director, Emeritus of Penumbra Theatre.

Formerly known as “Knitting Group,”

We have fewer knitters, but people who still love to get together. We meet at 1:00 pm the second Saturday of the month in homes for interesting conversation and delicious treats. Bring your quilting, knitting, book recommendations, or just your idle hands and join us September 9th at the home of Sandy and Mac Chatfield. Address: 4252 Toledo Ave. So. Phone # 952-927-8990. Please save 9-17-17 for our 2017 Flu Clinic.

On Sunday, September 17 Judson will again offer flu shots. They will be available from 10:30 to 12 in the library. Why should you get a flu shot? Getting a flu vaccination is the single best way to protect yourself, your coworkers, your family, and our community from the flu (CDC). There is a sign-up sheet on the table in the back of the sanctuary as well as forms you can fill out ahead of time. We do need at least 20 people signed up or we will be charged for having the clinic here.

Dedication of the Judson Rain Gardens

Join us Sunday, September 17th, for the dedication of the Judson Rain Gardens when you have an opportunity to participate in the christening of the gardens and bless them to continue to do a small part in taking care of God’s gift to us, the earth. Bring a rock (or, we’ll have some) to add to the erosion rocks, and sprinkle Mississippi River water on the gardens. Following the dedication of the gardens, there will be a community education event about the rain gardens. The public is being invited to come from 12:30 – 2:00 pm with an information table next to the Little Library garden.

Race Matters Potluck, Wednesday, September 20th

Please join us for the showing of the movie 13. To ensure that we have enough time for the movie and discussion, we will begin the movie promptly at 5 pm. Food will be set up on the table. Fill your plate and find a seat. Discussion, action ideas, and social time will follow. All are welcome.

WaC-Wednesdays at Curran’s

This is an open invitation for you to join Judson folks at 9:00 any Wednesday morning at Curran’s (4201 Nicollet Ave. S., Minneapolis). Put it on your calendar as “WaC” (Wednesdays at Curran’s). It’s another opportunity for us to connect with one another. Just show up and find our group at one of the round tables or a long table. Have breakfast, or just coffee; no agenda or topic-just conversation as we enjoy spending some time together. If you have questions, contact Keith Ford or Wayne Urbaniak.

Gordon Smith Judson Fund

The Gordon Smith Judson Fund (GSJF) is an endowment fund envisioned and initiated by the generous gift of church member Gordon Smith, then created and sustained by the ongoing support of the congregation of Judson Memorial Baptist Church. Gordon was supported by his church to attend a Baptist Youth Conference in Oslo, Norway. While there, he received what he referred to as his call to a ministry which inspired his subsequent life’s work serving for many years with American Baptist organizations. His desire was to provide opportunities for individuals to continue to move forward the Kingdom of God into the future for posterity. Consequently, the purpose of the fund is to provide financial support to individuals of any age, or groups, who are members of or attend Judson Memorial Baptist Church and who have a plan that meets the vision and requirements outlined. VISION: The fund is designed to be used in any of the following ways:

  1. Keeping our Baptist Heritage of commitment to missions and making a difference in the world alive in future generations.
  2. Being a catalyst for creating new ways of doing relevant ministry in the world.
  3. Maintaining Judson’s progressive theology and supporting action reflecting those beliefs related to social justice issues. Here are a couple links to information about the fund and the application for the fund.
