Email Notes from Travis
The first time I heard about Advent was in seminary, I thought it was neat but I had no idea what it was all about. Then during my first pastorate, I had to try and make sense of Advent and how to lead worship during the season. It seemed easy enough just light some candles and sing O Come, O Come Emmanuel and all would be well. But the more I learned about the season, the rituals, the history, the symbolism I realized even more that I had no idea what I was doing during Advent; for the most part, I still don’t. But that is okay because there are ways to help and assuage my ignorance. Those ways are ancient poems and hymns. Just let the rhythm and images of poets and dreamers and prophets and storytellers and artists lead us. So that is just what we are going to do this first Sunday of Advent a service of Advent Lesson and Carols. Carols old and new along with lessons from the prophets (and communion).
This Week at Judson

FIFTH ANNUAL JUDSON COMMUNITY HOLIDAY CAROL SING-AND-PLAY-ALONG
Sunday, December 10, 2017, 3:30 – 4:30 p.m., at Judson Memorial Baptist Church, 4101 Harriet Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55409
What do The Gospel Five, CharBara, Van Johnson, and twin cities’ composer/arranger Don Singley have in common? What fun place has space for instrumentalists (of all ages) and Play A Song of Christmas books for nearly every type of instrument? Where can you sing The Twelve Days of Christmas with colorful posters for each day? Where can you “have a little fun” with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer? Where can you eat cookies and choose whether to make a free-will donation for them to help homeless youth through YouthLink (see http://www.youthlinkmn.org)? Where can you join together in community with neighbors and friends to sing traditional, modern, secular, sacred, and original holiday carols for free? The answer to all of these questions is – the FIFTH ANNUAL JUDSON COMMUNITY HOLIDAY CAROL SING-AND-PLAY ALONG.
There will be word booklets for the songs (so it will be easier to sing all of the verses). Char and BarbaraEngen-Mangskau (aka “CharBara”) will lead us in singing (and playing) modern, old, secular, sacred, traditional, and new original holiday songs – such as Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming, Joy to the World, Frosty the Snowman, Jingle Bells, Silent Night, Christmas is Coming, and Home for Christmas. A mystery guest will help us have a little fun with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. There will be some new arrangements of some holiday songs for the instrumentalists. Van Johnson will be there to lead us and teach us about The Rebel Jesus. Plus, the Gospel Five (Judson’s own Gospel quartet) will be there to lead us in a Brahms carol and an African-American spiritual.
There will be several copies of easy instrumental books so that people who play all kinds of instruments can play along on most of the holiday songs. We have books for woodwinds, brass, strings, recorders, harps, guitars, and percussion. Plus, small hand percussion instruments will be provided for those wanting to add their rhythmic colors to the songs.
Cookies have been donated and a “donation jar” will be on the table with the cookies. All (i.e., 100%) of the money placed in the “donation jar” will be given to YouthLink for use in their work with homeless youth. So, bring your instruments for playing, your voices for singing, your ears for listening, your taste-buds for eating cookies, your willingness to have a little fun, and your common human hearts to join us in building a holiday community spirit and supporting YouthLink in its mission to help homeless youth. There is no admission fee. It is FREE for everyone.

Gordon Smith Judson Fund
The Gordon Smith Judson Fund (GSJF) is an endowment fund envisioned and initiated by the generous gift of church member Gordon Smith, then created and sustained by the ongoing support of the congregation of Judson Memorial Baptist Church. Gordon was supported by his church to attend a Baptist Youth Conference in Oslo, Norway. While there, he received what he referred to as his call to a ministry which inspired his subsequent life’s work serving for many years with American Baptist organizations. His desire was to provide opportunities for individuals to continue to move forward the Kingdom of God into the future for posterity. Consequently, the purpose of the fund is to provide financial support to individuals of any age, or groups, who are members of or attend Judson Memorial Baptist Church and who have a plan that meets the vision and requirements outlined. There are informational copies regarding the fund in the back of the sanctuary as well as application forms to fill out. Members: Jerry Larsen-Member at Large, Gretchen Williams-Christian Education, Steve Hirsch-Finance, and Marlys Wiens-Missions.
