Sermon: “The 1,000 Steps of Peace” – Rev. Travis Norvell

Worship Leader: Wayne Urbaniak

Personal Reflection: Luise Forseth

Music: Judson Choir

Ushers: Joel Frederickson, Jane Ann Nelson, Marlys Wiens

Email Notes from Travis

After Jesus’ resurrection, the early church found itself doing some pretty interesting and beautiful acts. One of those interesting and beautiful acts is found in the book of Acts chapter two when the early church lived a “common life.” It didn’t last long, but it did happen. I offer this story as a generative point for us to talk about peace. Acts 2:42-47 is an appropriate text for Peace Sunday and Mother’s Day (a day founded for peace).

See you on Sunday,

Pax Christi. Travis

Judson Folks Dig Dirt

We had an amazing turn out on Saturday morning May 6th, for the final shaping of the first of three rain gardens. More roots were removed, dirt was fluffed, compost was added, the bowl shape was formed along with a berm on the edges. Stepping-stones were placed to get to the hose. And we had so many helpers that a second crew began working at the corner to remove a spruce tree and other vegetation and begin removing wheelbarrow loads of dirt to the boulevard for the public to take. This was a huge undertaking. So much was accomplished. Treats again provided by Jane. Thank you. Volunteers included: the Jacobson’s, Urbaniak’s, Hesse’s, Tom Balcom, Fran Hirsch, Beth Waterhouse, and Diane Kolodziej.

Once again on Tuesday evening, six dirt-loving souls came to continue the rain garden effort. Each time we make amazing progress. This time Larry brought a roto-tiller, compliments of Jon Hesse’s connections. Larry and Pat Doyle took turns playing with it at the corner location being careful to avoid electrical lines from sign to building! They also encountered root obstacles and resorted to other electrical means to attack them. In the meantime, Sandy Chatfield, Fran Hirsch, Sandra Knoche and Barb Balcom started removing sod at the third rain garden location while discussing the politics of the day among other interesting topics. Thanks to all.

Gordon Smith Judson Fund

The Gordon Smith Judson Fund (GSJF) is an endowment fund envisioned and initiated by the generous gift of church member Gordon Smith, then created and sustained by the ongoing support of the congregation of Judson Memorial Baptist Church. Gordon was supported by his church to attend a Baptist Youth Conference in Oslo, Norway. While there, he received what he referred to as his call to a ministry which inspired his subsequent life’s work serving for many years with American Baptist organizations. His desire was to provide opportunities for individuals to continue to move forward the Kingdom of God into the future for posterity. Consequently, the purpose of the fund is to provide financial support to individuals of any age, or groups, who are members of or attend Judson Memorial Baptist Church and who have a plan that meets the vision and requirements outlined. VISION: The fund is designed to be used in any of the following ways:

  1. Keeping our Baptist Heritage of commitment to missions and making a difference in the world alive in future generations.
  2. Being a catalyst for creating new ways of doing relevant ministry in the world.
  3. Maintaining Judson’s progressive theology and supporting action reflecting those beliefs related to social justice issues. Here are a couple links to information about the fund and the application for the fund.

Reminder: Sermons & Personal Reflections Videos Available

Most Sundays, the sermon, and personal reflection are videotaped. These videos are posted on the Vimeo video-sharing site at Sermons. If you have any questions or comments, please contact Jackie Thureson.
