Second Hour Education

Join Travis as he invites a community conversation about the spiritual practices that sustain small churches. Travis will be able to utilize our participation and feedback in preparation to apply for a Lily Grant toward a Sabbatical project on sustainable small churches.

Email Notes from Travis

Friends, I am making a personal plea for you to come not just to church this Sunday but Second Hour too! Why? I am leading Second Hour to discuss a possible sabbatical project. Sabbatical, didn’t I just get here? Don’t you still have boxes and bags you still haven’t unpacked? I am applying for a Lily Foundation Sabbatical, and applications are due by April 21, 2017. The grants are awarded in August 2017, and funds are released in January of 2018. I will tell you all about my plans on Sunday. More importantly, I need your feedback and I need you all to think/dream about what you will do while I am away on sabbatical. Lily awards $50,000 for their programs divided thus: $35,000 for pastors and $15,000 for congregations. As you can surmise the process is highly competitive and only grants with active congregational input have a good chance of success. So I need you there this Sunday.

Peace, Travis.

America for Christ Offering

Last year the Rev. Dr. Jeffery Haggray was installed as the new CEO of American Baptist Home Mission Societies. Since then ABHMS has supported our Race Workshop with Penumbra Theatre, has challenged the denomination to center our churches on Christian social justice, has stood arm-in-arm with our Native American brothers and sisters in Standing Rock, advocated & promoted women in ministry, and has pushed for a more inclusive and welcoming body of believers. So it is with great enthusiasm that Judson is asked to support the America for Christ 2017 offering. The theme for the America for Christ Offering 2017, “Cultivating Leaders, Equipping Disciples, Healing Communities,” inspires and encourages us to partner with American Baptist Churches USA in answering God’s call to live out the Christian faith in transforming individuals, congregations and communities; to develop networks and programs committed to nurturing Christ-centered leaders; and to promote witness and evangelism as well as discipleship and social justice. There will be envelopes in the pews. Please make your check out to Judson Church and write AFC in the memo line. You can put cash in the envelopes.

Gordon Smith Judson Fund

The Gordon Smith Judson Fund (GSJF) is an endowment fund envisioned and initiated by the generous gift of church member Gordon Smith, then created and sustained by the ongoing support of the congregation of Judson Memorial Baptist Church. Gordon was supported by his church to attend a Baptist Youth Conference in Oslo, Norway. While there, he received what he referred to as his call to a ministry which inspired his subsequent life’s work serving for many years with American Baptist organizations. His desire was to provide opportunities for individuals to continue to move forward the Kingdom of God into the future for posterity. Consequently, the purpose of the fund is to provide financial support to individuals of any age, or groups, who are members of or attend Judson Memorial Baptist Church and who have a plan that meets the vision and requirements outlined. VISION: The fund is designed to be used in any of the following ways:

  1. Keeping our Baptist Heritage of commitment to missions and making a difference in the world alive in future generations.
  2. Being a catalyst for creating new ways of doing relevant ministry in the world.
  3. Maintaining Judson’s progressive theology and supporting action reflecting those beliefs related to social justice issues. Here are a couple links to information about the fund and the application for the fund.

Reminder: Sermons & Personal Reflections Videos Available
