Email Notes from Travis

Well, we had two “normal” Sundays in a row, but we ain’t gonna have three in a row!

This Sunday is Jazz Sunday featuring the Judson All Stars. And really that should be enough for a Sunday, but it ain’t. We will also have with us Laura Alden, Associate Executive Director of Publishing for Judson Press and American Baptist Home Mission Societies. She will be here to share with us about the America for Christ offering and to bring greetings. Surely, that is it. Nope. In addition, we will offer a commissioning for the group who will leave for Oaxaca, Mexico on Feb. 14th. Surely this is all, what else could a small church pack into a Sunday morning. Not even close. This Sunday during Second Hour we welcome back Doug Wallace for his annual discussion on Academy Award nominated films. Wow.

Can’t wait for Sunday…Travis

Last Call for Recycled Earrings!

I have had this fundraising idea, and it seems to be working terrifically. Wait until you see the beautiful earrings that will be for sale at VERY affordable prices, recycled from women in Judson Church, namely Fran Hirsch, Diane Kolodziej, Jackie Thureson, Beth Waterhouse, and YOU! They are simply gorgeous. Take this as an opportunity to clear out your jewelry box and recycle your “abundance” to support our church. Bring them Sunday, and I’ll still have time to package and price them for Great Gatherings on Feb 26th. Thank you!  — Beth Waterhouse

Race Matters – January Pot Luck  –

Wednesday, February 22, 2017, 5-7 pm

The discussion continues and now we are ready to move in a new direction. If you have been considering joining in on these Race Matters Pot Lucks, please jump in now. While we engaged in some meaty discussion in December and January, in February we will move in a slightly more active direction. We will be engaging with some conversational models to help us get more comfortable and accomplished at having uncomfortable conversations so that we learn to facilitate and lead conversations beyond our doors. Bring a dish to share.RSVP to Leslie Rapp (leslierapp@gmail.com). Your RSVP helps us plan for room set-up, so thanks for emailing!

    HEAR YE, HEAR YE.

Memorial service for Sydney Rice

On Saturday, February 25th at 11:00 am, we will celebrate the life of Sydney Rice. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution in Sydney’s name to Judson Memorial Baptist Church, or to the charity closest to your heart. Find a video prepared for Sydney’s 95th birthday at http://bit.ly/2jYOLcL. Here is a link to Sydney’s obituary that appeared in the January 29, Sunday paper.

Toy Drive “Donation Box” in Foyer Feb. 6 through Feb. 14

A Judson Preschool parent continues collecting toys through this Tuesday, February 14, for a “toy library” she helps run. No donation is too small!  Any small pieces lying around our houses are welcome and will be added to other similar items to make sets – that lone dinosaur or those 2 matchbox cars your kids don’t play with anymore. What a great way to keep items out of the landfill!

America for Christ Offering

Last year the Rev. Dr. Jeffery Haggray was installed as the new CEO of American Baptist Home Mission Societies. Since then ABHMS has supported our Race Workshop with Penumbra Theatre, has challenged the denomination to center our churches on Christian social justice, has stood arm-in-arm with our Native American brothers and sisters in Standing Rock, advocated & promoted women in ministry, and has pushed for a more inclusive and welcoming body of believers. So it is with great enthusiasm that Judson is asked to support the America for Christ 2017 offering. The theme for the America for Christ Offering 2017, “Cultivating Leaders, Equipping Disciples, Healing Communities,” inspires and encourages us to partner with American Baptist Churches USA in answering God’s call to live out the Christian faith in transforming individuals, congregations and communities; to develop networks and programs committed to nurturing Christ-centered leaders; and to promote witness and evangelism as well as discipleship and social justice. There will be envelopes in the pews. Please make your check out to Judson Church and write AFC in the memo line. You can put cash in the envelopes.

Gordon Smith Judson Fund

The Gordon Smith Judson Fund (GSJF) is an endowment fund envisioned and initiated by the generous gift of church member Gordon Smith, then created and sustained by the ongoing support of the congregation of Judson Memorial Baptist Church. Gordon was supported by his church to attend a Baptist Youth Conference in Oslo, Norway. While there, he received what he referred to as his call to a ministry which inspired his subsequent life’s work serving for many years with American Baptist organizations. His desire was to provide opportunities for individuals to continue to move forward the Kingdom of God into the future for posterity. Consequently, the purpose of the fund is to provide financial support to individuals of any age, or groups, who are members of or attend Judson Memorial Baptist Church and who have a plan that meets the vision and requirements outlined. VISION: The fund is designed to be used in any of the following ways:

  1. Keeping our Baptist Heritage of commitment to missions and making a difference in the world alive in future generations.
  2. Being a catalyst for creating new ways of doing relevant ministry in the world.
  3. Maintaining Judson’s progressive theology and supporting action reflecting those beliefs related to social justice issues. Here are a couple links to information about the fund and the application for the fund.
